Be A Player Introduces the "Parkie Reprint Back Checking" Contest

(Toronto, ON; December 5, 2001): In the Game, Inc., the manufacturer of the Be A Player brands of hockey cards, has added an extra interactive element to its 2001-02 Parkhurst issue in the form of the "Parkie Back Check" Contest.

In addition to an impressive 300-card base set with 50 short-printed rookies, and adding to a spectacular array of autographed and game-worn memorabilia insert cards, the new Parkhurst brand also includes reproductions of 150 various cards originally issued in sets from 1951-52 through 1963-64. This reprint set features many of hockey's most famous names including Richard, Plante, Sawchuk, Mahovlich, Horton, as well as Mr. Hockey®, Gordie Howe.

These 150 cards are faithful reproductions in every way... almost. The colourful card fronts and nostalgic designs bring back memories of the old days. The card backs with their simple layouts and unique biographies are reminiscent of a quaint era when hockey truly was just a game.

"Because these were the cards I collected when I was young, I was determined to re-introduce them to a whole new generation of collectors," said Dr. Brian H. Price, president of In the Game. "That's how much they mean to me. However, I also wanted to add a twist, something that would inspire today's hobbyist to take a closer look at the cards of yesteryear where everything started."

Hence, the Parkie Back Check Contest. The card backs on 54 of the 150 reprints have deliberately been left blank. (The backs of the 12 additional 1951-52 Parkhurst cards were always blank so they don't count!) Collectors are then encouraged to log onto the Be A Player website at www.baptradingcards.com where they will be asked specific questions about the information originally found on those blank backs. For example, you may be asked about Tim Horton's height, or how many goals Henri Richard scored in the 1962-63 season. Then just write that information directly on the blank back of the respective card and send it to the U.S. or Canadian Be A Player office and you will receive "completed" versions of each of the reprints.

All those who participate in the contest will also be eligible for prizes. Entrants have a chance to win the grand prize of a Parkhurst hockey jersey autographed by Mr. Hockey® himself, Gordie Howe. In addition, 50 other lucky entrants will each receive an unopened box of Parkhurst hockey cards.

"We like this contest for several reasons," explained Price. "Not only does it raise awareness and appreciation for the original Parkhurst cards and players from decades ago, but it will bring collectors into hobby shops as they search for the required information. More often than not, the only place you'll find these older cards is in your local card store.

"It also helps drive traffic to our website. Given the popularity of computer technology within collecting circles, we understand how productive our online relationship with hobbyists can be. That's the way of the future and we want to be part of it."

The deadline for the grand prize is July 1, 2002. However, collectors will be able to redeem their blank-back Parkhurst cards (with the correct tidbit of information) right through until December 31, 2002.

"In keeping with the name of the contest, we think we're playing a strong two-way hobby game," said Price. "We're taking our assignment very seriously, whether we are trying to score goals or to do what is best for the hobby team. The collectors, manufacturers and shop owners are all part of that team."
