BE A PLAYER ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF THE POPULAR "MASKS" INSERTSPRESS RELEASE (Toronto, ON; December 18, 2001); In the Game, Inc., the manufacturer of the Be A Player brands of hockey cards, is bringing back one of hockey card collector's most beloved insert card concepts, namely The Masks! All hockey hobbyists understand the popularity of hockey masks. Their colourful and elaborate designs have offered fans a glimpse of the personal side of hockey's true warriors. Many people may not recognize an NHL goaltender if he walked right past them, but show someone his mask and it often leads to instant recognition. Be A Player will introduce a new series of 40 Masks cards in 2001-02, all printed using the renowned Dufex technology that made them so memorable in the past. The first 30 cards will be seeded in packs of the upcoming Between the Pipes product, the first brand of hockey cards devoted exclusively to goaltenders. It is slated for release in February, 2002. The remaining 10 cards are designated for the Be A Player Update set scheduled for release this spring. Cards focusing on the masks of specific NHL netminders were first introduced as a subset and then as inserts in various hockey card releases from 1992-93 through 1997-98. They remain as some of the most popular and widely traded inserts from that era to this day. Goaltenders are the specific focus of a greater percentage of hockey card collectors than ever before. "That is why it made perfect sense to bring these inserts back again," said Dr. Brian H. Price, President of In the Game. "They are a perfect tie-in with our new Between the Pipes set. When it comes to a goalie mask, you may be looking at the single most dramatic piece of equipment in professional sports. There's no doubt in my mind these will be one of the most popular insert sets offered by any manufacturer this season." The Masks insert series is not only devoted to today's top goalies like Curtis Joseph, Patrick Roy, Ed Belfour, Roberto Luongo, Evgeni Nabokov, and Nikolai Khabibulin but also greats of the past like Jacques Plante and Gerry Cheevers. There will also be two parallel versions of the base set including a limited Silver version and an even more scarce Gold rendition. In the Game, Inc. has produced the Be A Player brands of hockey trading cards since 1998-99. Their lineup of products for 2001-02 includes The Memorabilia Series (released August 2001), Parkhurst (released December 5, 2001), The Signature Series, The Ultimate Memorabilia 2nd Edition, The Update Series, and Between the Pipes (the first-ever all-goalie issue).
