George "Red" Horner: 1909-2005
In The Game is saddened by the recent passing of
former Toronto Maple Leaf great and Hockey
Hall-of-Famer George "Red" Horner.
A rugged defenseman who excelled using an effective combination of skill and intimidation, Horner broke in the NHL with the Leafs in 1928-29 after playing junior hockey with the Toronto Marlboros. He played 12 NHL seasons in Toronto and helped lead the team to a Stanley Cup championship in 1931-32. Horner backed down from no one on the ice. He led the league in penalty minutes for eight straight years from 1932-33 until 1939-40. His mark of 167 minutes in 1935-36 remained unbroken for 20 years. His teammates appreciated his aggressive style, and realized it helped open up plenty of ice for all of them. A leader on and off the ice, Horner served as the Leafs' team captain in 1938-39 and 1939-40. He played in NHL All-Star Games in both 1934 and 1937. By the time he retired in 1940, he had tallied 42 goals, 110 assists, 152 points, and 1,254 penalty minutes in his career. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1965 and was the oldest living Hall-of-Famer at the time of his passing. "A few months ago while Red was signing his Franchise autograph cards It occurred to me that Red was the most important hockey personality alive" said Ken Whitmell of In The Game, Inc. "Considering the teams he played on and the history he was a part of, Red was truly a living legend and it was a great honor to have included him in our set." Red Horner autographs can also be found in the upcoming Ultimate Memorabilia 5th Edition. |
